Vehicle Safety Advice

Did you know that it is illegal to leave your vehicle running unattended while you de-ice it or warm it up in wintry weather. If someone takes it while it is left like this, your insurer will not pay out because you won’t be covered.

On frosty mornings do not be tempted to leave your vehicle unattended whilst defrosting your vehicle. Many motorists will either leave their vehicle insecure or will lock the doors with a spare key whilst they go inside. Remember it only takes a matter of seconds for a thief to drive away with your car!

Here is some advice to keep you safe on our roads during the winter months:

Winter Driving Safety Advice

Cold weather can create hazards on the roads.

Motorists need to pay due care and attention on the roads in the winter and be able to adapt to changing conditions. Even the most experienced drivers can find themselves getting into difficulties when the roads are icy. Ask yourself whether your journey is necessary.

Before you set off on your journey

  • Make sure your vehicle is in winter roadworthy condition.
  • Check that your tyres meet the legal requirements. Tyres that do not have the legal tread will seriously affect the traction and steering of your vehicle.
  • Clear your windscreen properly of ice and snow.
  • Check your brakes and ensure your lights are working properly.
  • Check your oil and washer fluid levels.
  • Carry water and de-icer in the car with you.
  • If you are going on a longer journey, make sure you bring food, hot drinks, warm blankets and a fully charged mobile phone.
