Frodsham and District Choral Society are holding their Christmas concert – a “Festival of Britten” at St Laurence Church on Saturday, 3rd December at 7.30pm.
The truth about Santa!
Forget the stories about Lapland, “little helpers” and red-nosed reindeer – we will tell you the story of the “real” Saint Nicolas, as set to music by Benjamin Britten. Let us lift the white beard and recount the story of a 4th century Turkish bishop who became the patron saint of sailors, archers, children, brewers and pawnbrokers!
Britten’s Christmas cantata, “Saint Nicolas” presents the birth, childhood and career of Nicolas, involving some highly dramatic miracles, including the saving of some pickled boys!
In our “Festival of Britten” we will continue the Christmas theme by performing his much-loved and beautiful “Ceremony of Carols” and the gorgeous “Hymn to the Virgin” which he wrote as a teenager.
Put the date in your diaries.
