Mayor reflects on Frodsham in lockdown

Our Town Mayor, Cllr Caroline Ashton, reflects on a year in lockdown and how Frodsham has come together to support each other at a difficult time.

Cheshire West & Chester Council has released a video in which Cllr Ashton looks back on a year of coronavirus restrictions and celebrates the community-minded actions of local residents.

In it, she says: “During the last year, which has been the worst times most of us have been through in our lifetime, we have witnessed the best of Frodsham.

“Frodsham is known as a town that comes together, and this is what we did in response to the first lockdown 12 months ago.”

The Mayor continues:

Just before the first lock down two local residents approached a Town Councillor with a question. What about our isolated residents with no family?

An idea was born! The councillor took the idea and Frodsham and District Open Hands was established with Frodsham Churches Together.

A steering group of five Frodsham residents was set up. This was to be a trusted community group. It was the first of its kind to launch.

Engagement with Frodsham residents was harnessed through many routes including social media.

Frodsham and District Open Hands has its first anniversary this week. It is a great example of how a community has come together at a grass root level with a true community spirit.

TRUST is at all levels, from our residents who volunteer, to our residents who use Frodsham and District Open Hands for shopping, collection and delivery of prescriptions. The Town Council trusted the volunteers to deliver the annual Christmas over 70s vouchers.

Local businesses including bakers, butchers, greengrocers, publicans have also come to together. They prepared and cooked Sunday lunches for residents.

We must not forget our medical centre staff who have set up in the leisure centre to deliver an amazing vaccination service.

Finally, our thoughts are very much with those whose loved ones are no longer with us.

Thank you Frodsham for all you have done as always, we have come together and got on with it and not just talked about it!”
