A couple of years ago, Frodsham Town Council sponsored the purchase of 11 bat boxes that were subsequently installed in Hob Hey Wood. Licenced bat handler, Tom Kenwright has been monitoring them ever since and we’ve started to see bats using them.
At this morning’s guided walk through the wood as part of Frodsham Festival of Walks, Tom examined some of the bat boxes and found bats in residence in two of them.
One of them held five brown long-eared bats! Tom was able to share this wonderful wildlife spectacle with about 30 local people who attended the walk, and gave a talk about just how amazing and important these creatures are.
Now that we have this evidence that the boxes are in use, we can confirm that the council’s kindness in purchasing them was a real investment into Frodsham’s wildlife; our bats are benefiting from the increased number of homes the boxes provide.
